The Part of Yoga Teacher Training That’s Often Missing
Jolene Knight | DEC 6, 2025
When I first trained as a yoga teacher, I learned the postures, cues, and sequences—but not the why behind the poses. It wasn’t until I studied yoga therapy that I began to understand yoga as an energetic practice, not just a physical one.
In yoga therapy, we work with the body’s subtle anatomy: the five prana vayus (the directions of energy flow), the nadis (energy channels), and the chakras (energy centers). These aren’t just poetic ideas—they’re the energetic blueprints that shape how we move, breathe, and feel.
For yoga teachers, understanding this subtle anatomy changes everything. It transforms how we sequence, how we cue breath, and how we read what’s happening in a student’s body. Instead of teaching shapes, we’re guiding energy, helping students feel more connected to themselves and their practice.
That’s why I’ve started mentoring other teachers and partnering with yoga schools to bring these teachings into their programs. Many 200-hour trainings don’t have space to explore the energetic side of yoga deeply, and yet it’s what gives our practice life and meaning. Integrating subtle anatomy and prana awareness doesn’t complicate yoga—it simplifies it, creating a more mindful and embodied approach for students.
Through mentorship, workshops, and collaboration, I help teachers develop the confidence to integrate these concepts into their classes, from movement sequencing to breathwork and energy-focused adjustments. It’s a way to bring depth, curiosity, and heart to every session.
If you’re a yoga teacher, training school, or wellness professional looking to integrate this perspective, I’d love to collaborate. Together, we can bring the transformative power of energetic yoga into classrooms, studios, and communities.
