When people hear that I’m a yoga therapist and offer yoga therapy... the first question I usually get is:

“So…how is that different from a yoga class?”

It’s a good question, because on the surface both involve yoga.

But the experience is very different.

Group Classes: Shared Practice

In a typical class, the teacher guides a group through the same sequence of poses. There’s music, flow, and a shared energy in the room. It can feel uplifting, social, and motivating. I love teaching and practicing in this way—it builds community and consistency. But here’s the catch: in a group class, the sequence isn’t tailored to anyone in particular. The teacher has to plan for the “middle ground,” which means it might not meet your personal needs.

Yoga Therapy: Personal Practice

Yoga therapy turns the focus completely toward you. Instead of giving you a class to follow, I create a personalized practice you can do at home, at your pace. It’s designed for your specific body, health concerns, and goals.

This might include:

  • Gentle movements that support healing from an injury

  • Breathing techniques to calm your nervous system

  • Simple postures that improve energy flow and balance

  • Short daily practices you can fit into your routine

Think of it as yoga with a prescription—except instead of medication, it’s breath, movement, and mindfulness tailored just for you.

The Perfect First Step

Here’s something I wish more people knew: you don’t need to have experience to start yoga therapy. In fact, many people come to me who have never done yoga before. Because it’s individualized, it’s one of the safest and most welcoming ways to begin.

If you’re curious about yoga but feel nervous about stepping into a group class, yoga therapy can be the perfect first step.
